How to word counter
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- The counters update as you type: words, characters, sentences and more.
- Use it for essays with limits, posts with caps, or abstracts with minimums.
- Nothing to download: the counts are the product.
The counts, and where they are honest
Words are counted the way text processors do: any run of non-space characters is a word, so hyphenated compounds and URLs count as one. Characters are shown with and without spaces, because form limits never agree on which they mean. Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation; paragraphs by blank-line breaks.
The reading-time estimate uses the standard 200-words-per-minute figure, rounded up to the minute. It is a planning number, not a measurement: dense technical text reads slower, light prose faster.
Everything updates as you type, with no convert button, because the answer changes with every keystroke. The text never leaves the box: there is no server, no draft history, no analytics on what you wrote.
Where it earns its keep
Abstracts with a 250-word floor, meta descriptions with a 158-character ceiling, posts against a 280-character cap, applications with one-page limits: every one of these is a counting problem, and every one is easier when the counter sits next to the text instead of behind a paste-and-wait round trip.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
Any run of non-space characters counts as one word, matching how text processors and form validators usually count.
Which character count should I compare to a form limit?
Check both: "Characters" includes spaces, "No spaces" does not. Most form limits include spaces.
How accurate is the reading time?
It uses 200 words per minute, the standard planning figure. Treat it as an estimate, not a measurement.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere or saved.
Private by design
Stays on your device. Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser: open the Network tab while you convert and you will see that nothing is sent. No account, no watermark, no daily limit.
